Gatineau, Thursday, December 5, 2013
Good morning to all of you, and thank you very much for being here.
This is a wonderful day in the city of Gatineau, throughout this province and right around the world. The tradition of La grande guignolée reminds us that this has always been a place where people care about each other and give back to their community.
Each of you understands the importance of giving, particularly at this special time of the year.
Generosity and sharing are features of successful societies everywhere. Giving is the right and the caring thing to do, and it is also the smart thing to do.
Time and again in my life I have seen that those who find the time to volunteer and the means to give back benefit in so many ways. When we give, we help others, and we grow as individuals and as a community.
In a democratic society, everyone has something to give, be it time, talent or money. And this is so important, because as we all know, the need out there is real, and it is growing.
That is why I found it so heartening to see so many of you out there this morning at the intersection of Boulevard Alexandre-Taché and Boulevard St-Joseph, and to see so many drivers stopping to contribute.
It was a reminder that we should all try to find a moment to slow down and help others, in whatever way we are able.
My wife, Sharon, and I are delighted to have been invited to participate in La grande guignolée today, and to share our giving moments with each of you.
I would also like to encourage you to visit mygivingmoment.ca to share your stories of generosity with others.
Thank you for your contribution and enthusiasm on this important day. You are an example for all Canadians.
