This national historic site is set in an idyllic, 79-acre urban oasis located only a few minutes from downtown Ottawa and Gatineau. You are welcome to visit the residence and workplace of the governor general and the grounds year-round. Find out now what there is to see and do!

The grounds of Rideau Hall are open daily from 8:00 a.m. to one hour before sunset. Rideau Hall and the Residence of the Governor General at the Citadelle are now open for in-person visits. 

While masks are not required, visitors are encouraged to wear one when indoors. Masks are available on-site.

History of Rideau Hall

Entrepreneur Thomas MacKay built Rideau Hall in 1838 as a home for his family. His villa became an official residence at Confederation in 1867, and Lord Monck was the first governor general to live here.
