The governor general presents honours and awards to acknowledge extraordinary people on behalf of all Canadians. From community volunteers to scientists, actors to members of the military, scholars to our next-door neighbours, hundreds of Canadians are recognized each year.
Many awards and honours exist, including the Order of Canada, the Meritorious Service Decorations and the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers. Recognition is also given for bravery, artistic excellence and academic achievement, among many other activities. Recipients come from all walks of life but share a desire to help others and achieve excellence.
The governor general is also head of the Canadian Heraldic Authority, which recognizes Canadians through the granting of coats of arms, flags and badges as part of the Canadian Honours System.
