Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, was in Canada’s Arctic from August 30 to September 1, 2018, where she visited the Hamlet of Pangnirtung, in Nunavut, before boarding the Canadian research icebreaker CCGS Amundsen, in Qikiqtarjuaq, for a 36-hour scientific program to explore the Arctic Ocean.

  • The Governor General arrived in the Hamlet of Pangnirtung, in Nunavut, to meet with members of the community. She will be in Canada’s Arctic, from August 30 to September 1, 2018, where she will also be boarding the Canadian research icebreaker CCGS Amunds
  • Upon her arrival, Her Excellency was greeted by the Mayor of Pangnirtung His Worship Stevie Komoartok at the Council Chamber.
  • The Governor General joined by Dr. Mona Nemer, Canada’s Chief Science Advisor (directly to her left), and the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Sport (first row to the left), met with the mayor and his councillors to discuss the daily real
  • Mrs. Anne Dawson, Chief of Staff to Minister Duncan, interacted with councillors from the Hamlet during the meeting.
  • Following the meeting, the Governor General attended a community feast where she had the opportunity to meet with Elders and learn some of their traditions.
