March 20, 2008

We came from Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. We enriched Canada with our accents and our contributions. We are privileged to have roots that run deep in these vast lands that were home to the Aboriginal people who welcomed us. And in return, we were given a country of unlimited possibilities, where the presence, strength and vitality of Canada’s Francophonie take on special meaning this year with the 400th anniversary of the city of Québec.

Each generation of Francophones, from one end of the country to the other, has helped to ensure the continued existence of the French fact. This sense of linguistic belonging that we share is a gateway, a meeting place, a vehicle for solidarity, and a celebration. Language is a unique way to understand and interpret the world. Seen in that light, La Francophonie is a melding of hearts and minds. It is also a call for dialogue with those who speak a different language.

May this International Francophonie Day inspire all Canadians to take part in the anniversary festivities, bringing generations together and encouraging solidarity among peoples.

Michaëlle Jean
