In the afternoon of 13 May 1981, in Sherwood Park, the late Leonard Komant, in a fine display of outstanding selflessness and courage, attempted to rescue a youth who had fallen into a six-metre well containing a mixture of gas and water. Mr. Komant witnessed the accident and hurried over. Seeing that the young man had lost consciousness, with complete disregard for his own safety, he lowered himself into the well. But seconds later, also overcome by the deadly fumes, he fell on top of the young man. Though valiant efforts were made to retrieve the victims, it was not until later that firemen recovered the bodies. Mr. Komant made the ultimate sacrifice while trying to save the life of a stranger.
