On April 10, 1991, in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Detective Dion saved a suicidal girl, armed with a knife, from the icy waters of the Saint-François river. When he arrived at the scene, Detective Dion tried to convince the girl, who was then on the river bank, to surrender her weapon and not throw herself into the water. However, she continued to back away and was carried off by the current. Heedless of the depth and freezing temperature of the water, and the force of the current, Detective Dion jumped in and succeeded in catching hold of the girl. Another policeman threw them a rope and pulled them out of the water.
