Vert eight barrulets intersecting in fess point, overall an open book Or;

Symbolism

Green and gold are the colours of the province and of the University of Saskatchewan, from which His Honour was awarded his PhD, and of which he was University Secretary. The book indicates His Honour’s work as an educator and as a published author. The spokes make two references: first, to bicycle wheels to refer to His Honour’s love of cycling and more generally to the ideas of movement and health; and second, to the rotunda window below the dome of the Saskatchewan legislature.

Symbolism

The use of the dome of the Legislature not only marks His Honour’s position as Lieutenant-Governor, but pays tribute to his service as Clerk of the Legislature from 1969 to 1989. His Honour has also written a photo history of the building.

Two harts Or each gorged of a wreath of orchids, Gerbera daisies proper and roses Gules pendent therefrom a disc of Saltcoats tartan, standing on a beaver dam proper;

Symbolism

The harts are a reference to the name Barnhart. The flowers represent Their Honours’ three children: the orchid for David, the Gerbera daisy for Sarah, and the rose for Alyssa. The beaver dam is a feature of Saltcoats, Saskatchewan, where Their Honours maintain a home. The tartan is that of Saltcoats.
