The issue of online violence has been on our minds over the past year. During the #16Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence, we’re talking about it.

In February 2023, the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General disabled all comments on social media due to an increase in abusive, misogynistic and racist engagement including a greater number of violent threats.

In the months that followed, Governor General Simon fostered discussions with individuals across Canada about creating safer spaces for women online.

There is still much more to be done, as the abuse of women—particularly women belonging to minority groups—is still ongoing.

Let us listen, let us learn and let us act.
