Governor General participates in the unveiling of a commemorative stamp

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, and Mr. Whit Fraser participated in the unveiling of a commemorative stamp featuring celebrated Indigenous singer-songwriter and musician, Buffy Sainte-Marie, at the National Arts Centre.

This new Canada Post stamp pays tribute to Sainte-Marie for her contributions as both a musical and visual artist and an activist, educator and philanthropist dedicated to Indigenous rights.

About Buffy Sainte-Marie
Buffy Sainte-Marie is an award-winning Cree singer-songwriter and a Companion of the Order of Canada. She has also received the Polaris Music Prize, the governor general’s Performing Arts Award, and multiple Juno awards and Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards. In 1983, she became the first Indigenous person to win an Academy Award, for co-writing the song “Up Where We Belong.”
