OTTAWA—Canadians join together in grief today as we mourn the loss of Private Terry John Street of the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, who was killed in the Panjwayi District, in Afghanistan, the victim of an improvised explosive device. My husband, Jean-Daniel Lafond, and I are deeply saddened by this tragedy.

I recently met with several outstanding soldiers who were recognized for their meritorious service and military valour. In the face of fear, they remained steadfast; in times of trial, they persisted towards resolution.

This is true of all the proud women and men who are serving in this turbulent environment, at their own peril. Private Street was a man of this caliber. He will be greatly missed by his fellow troops, his friends and his family. We can only imagine their sorrow, and we offer them our deepest condolences.

Michaëlle Jean
