We are gathered today on the traditional, unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg Nation.

Welcome everyone to Rideau Hall, and congratulations to all those being invested into or promoted within the Order of Merit of the Police Forces.

Celebrating the achievements of police across Canada is so important.

Today's ceremony is taking place not only during a busy period for Canadian democracy—and the hockey series—but also during National Police Week.

This week, across Canada, people are shining a spotlight on the essential work you do in our communities.

And rightly so. Wearing the badge is one of the toughest jobs in our country.

As police officers, or as leaders and supporters of those in uniform, you must fulfill many roles—from social worker to first responder, and from conflict mediator to expert communicator.

You support your communities through the toughest times—whether it's helping accident victims, assisting families in crisis, comforting those affected by violence, or addressing issues related to drug use and mental health.

Throughout your careers, you have faced dangerous, high-pressure situations that most Canadians will never experience.

In the face of danger, you demonstrated outstanding strength and commitment to duty.

You have also demonstrated remarkable adaptability.

Our society is diverse and constantly evolving, and so are the crime and security challenges you face.

Yet, you continue to find innovative methods and solutions, and draw on your inner strength, as your work demands significant mental resilience.

And for that, Canada is deeply grateful to each of you.

Today, we honour your exceptional service. We also honour your contributions to building trust between police officers and Canadian communities.

Thank you for your unwavering commitment and dedication, and for the empathy and benevolence you show to those you serve.

I also want to recognize your families for the immense sacrifices they make and the unique challenges they face as you carry out this important work.

Once again, congratulations.
