Recipients and members of the Canadian journalism community,

Families and friends.

We are gathered today on the traditional, unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg Nation

Congratulations to all of you, and welcome to Rideau Hall.

This evening, we celebrate the very best of Canadian public service journalism.

We honour the investigative skills, the courage, and the tenacity required to uncover stories that matter – stories that spur action, provoke debate, and ultimately strengthen our country and communities.

The past few months have been challenging  – characterized by rapid change, uncertainty, and at times, division.

Each of you here tonight plays a critical role in capturing—and making sense of—the complexities of our world, from Parliament Hill to communities across the country, to events around the world.

And all of this is unfolding within a fundamentally changing international landscape—one marked by tension, conflict, and long-standing partnerships under strain.

So, I suspect you haven't been short of topics to cover lately.

Your work is essential to maintaining a strong democracy and healthy public debate.

Each of you is working tirelessly—asking the tough questions and challenging assumptions—to ensure the public receives the fair and transparent information they rightfully expect.

When I read your stories, or listen to your reporting, I feel a deep respect and appreciation for the fundamental role you play.

Being a journalist today means standing at the front lines in the fight against misinformation. It requires you to diligently check facts, sift through mountains of data to discern credible sources and extract meaningful insights.

It also means navigating a world increasingly hostile to press freedom, where polarization is deepening and trust in institutions is eroding. Building trust is not a simple task.

So, thank you for your determination, your adaptability and your innovation.

Thank you for your thirst for truth and integrity.

And thank you for guiding the next generation, ensuring they uphold the tradition of excellence in Canadian journalism.

Enjoy the evening!
