I am honoured to join you on the traditional, unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg Nation, as we commemorate a historic moment that continues to hold profound significance today.

Twenty-five years ago, the repatriation of the Unknown Soldier brought a sense of closure and reverence to our nation.

The Unknown Soldier symbolizes the approximately 116 000 Canadians who gave their lives in the pursuit of peace and freedom.

Though many of their names and stories remain unknown, their sacrifice left a lasting impact on countless lives.

With boundless courage, they defended our way of life and our security. And for this, we remain forever grateful.

Last August, I visited the Canadian National Vimy Memorial and the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial in France.

As our guides described the dire reality of the trenches, I kept thinking of the young people who went through these dark hours—and of their families who endured the pain of loss.

May we continue to honour our fallen, our veterans, and the vital work that our Canadian Armed Forces have carried out to this day.

Our veterans continue to inspire me.

Earlier this month, at the Holten Canadian War Cemetery in the Netherlands, I had the honour of meeting Canadian veterans of the Second World War in person, whose ages ranged from 96 to 105.

They told me poignant stories of their wartime experiences. For many, survival felt nothing short of a miracle, as they had lost numerous close friends in battle.

The Unknown Soldier reminds us that peace—and life itself—should never be taken for granted.

This week, we stand with Their Majesties, who yesterday paid tribute to the Unknown Soldier and all who have served. Let us reaffirm our shared commitment to upholding the values of democracy, equality and respect.

Let us continue to guide the younger generation in learning about our history and the priceless gift of peace.

And let us redouble our efforts to build a society—and a world—where dialogue, co-operation, and understanding rise above division and conflict.

Lest we forget.
