Allow me to begin by acknowledging that this event is taking place on the traditional territory of the Algonquin Nation.
What a thrill it is to be here to light the Canada Winter Games Torch that will burn brightly as it is relayed to Prince George, British Columbia for the Games.
Next year promises to be a truly memorable sporting year for Canadians. Let me list some of the reasons why.
A number of major international sporting events will take place in Canada next year, including the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and the IIHF World Hockey Junior Championships.
Canada will also host the 25th edition of the Canada Games, the World Men’s Curling Championships and dozens of other sporting events.
And of course, as ever, millions of active Canadians will participate in amateur sporting events across the country.
I could go on, but you get the idea: 2015 promises to be a Canadian year of sport like no other.
For these reasons and so many more, I am delighted to proclaim 2015 the Year of Sport in Canada!
As an avid sports and physical fitness enthusiast, I am aware of the incredible amount of hard work and dedication athletes and coaches put into their chosen sport.
Similarly, I understand the huge amounts of time and energy organizers expend in putting on sporting events of such magnitude.
To the athletes, coaches and organizers, and to all who are helping to make the Year of Sport in Canada possible: thank you.
Sports and physical activity improve our lives in so many ways. They enhance our health and well-being, help us build teamwork skills, and can foster a sense of personal achievement.
And let’s not lose sight of this simple but important fact: sports are a lot of fun to play and watch!
With so many national and international events taking place next year, we also have a wonderful opportunity to learn about the cultures and traditions of others outside of the field of competition.
Let us all seize the opportunity this year presents to celebrate physical fitness, excellence and fair play.
Thank you.
