I am delighted to be here to invest Mr. René Angélil into the Order of Canada as a Member and to promote Ms. Céline Dion to the level of Companion. Congratulations to you both.

Throughout my mandate as governor general, I have had the honour of welcoming many Canadians into the Order of Canada. And each ceremony has been so special.

Since its introduction in 1967, the Order of Canada has honoured thousands of Canadians who have made and continue to make great contributions to our nation.

And every recipient that I have had the privilege of meeting has lived up to the Order’s motto: “They desire a better country.”

To see their level of commitment and dedication to our country, to see caring, creative, intelligent and innovative Canadians honoured—it is a humbling experience.

At each ceremony I am struck by the amazing things that Canadians create when they work together using their diverse talents to make a stronger nation a smarter, more caring Canada.

That is exactly what you have done throughout your professional lives and in your philanthropic work. You have achieved international success, and have been wonderful ambassadors for Canada on the world stage.

You have added so much value to our nation, on a cultural level, certainly, but also on a humanitarian level. You both understand the importance of giving and of strengthening the community through action. Your commitment to helping fellow Canadians and people around the world is inspiring, and we are grateful for what you have done.

You both represent what the Order of Canada and this country hold dear, and I hope that you will wear your honour with pride no matter where you go.

I am pleased to present you with your insignia today.

Thank you.
