The Citadelle, Friday, October 4, 2013

I am pleased to welcome you to the Citadelle, one of Canada’s most historic sites, for this special ceremony.

The Order of Merit of the Police Forces is among our country’s most prestigious honours, and with good reason.

As my predecessor, the Right Honourable Vincent Massey, once said:

“We cannot dispense with any means of maintaining and preserving the rule of law, which is the ground of our liberty.”

Simply put, the rule of law is what makes us free, and your contributions as members of Canada’s police forces are fundamental to maintaining the free and democratic society we cherish.

Whether you are being recognized as a commander, officer or member of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces, this honour celebrates truly outstanding leadership and service in policing.

Importantly, the focus of the Order is broad. It encompasses exceptional merit, contributions to policing and community development.

This honour recognizes the fact that your job is about much more than strict policing and law enforcement.

Rather, you are community builders in the broadest sense, helping to create a sense of trust, belonging, well-being and, of course, security, that is so essential to strong communities and nations.

It is difficult to overstate the importance of your leadership. Just as this honour is a symbol of excellence, each of you is a symbol of authority within your respective communities.

Furthermore, your example serves to inspire your colleagues in the police forces. With this honour, you have a great responsibility to continue to lead.

Never underestimate your ability to inspire others through your actions.

As chancellor of the Order and as governor general, I am proud of your accomplishments.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank your families and loved ones for supporting you in your work.

I know that policing can take an emotional, and even physical, toll on the men and women who serve, but it can also take a toll on their loved ones.

And there are risks involved for all.

Each of you has dedicated yourself to serving others and to upholding the rule of law, and for that, we are deeply grateful.

On behalf of all Canadians, thank you and congratulations on your remarkable accomplishments.
