Winter in our nation’s capital is a special time. Beavertails and hot chocolate are consumed with delight. Mounds of snow become an attractive place to build and play and imagine.

And Winterlude provides all of us with a fantastic place to celebrate with each other, with friends and family.

For more than 30 years, Winterlude has helped us enjoy the season. In fact, winter would not be the same without this annual tradition, which would not even exist without the dedication of those at the National Capital Commission and the cities of Ottawa and Gatineau. I would also like to make particular mention and thank the many volunteers who work so hard during this festival.

Over the next few weeks, I know that Canadians and many others from around the world will explore all that Winterlude has to offer. I know that both Ottawa and Gatineau will open its arms to all who are young and young-at-heart. And, most of all, I know that families will find new ways to spend time together.

The light of Winterlude, expressed in the stunning displays here at City Hall and inside all of us, will last far longer than the festival itself.

Let us hold on to the season as we would hold on to a loved one. Let us treasure this time and always remember that the wind chill is no match for the warmth of Canadians.

Have a safe, joyful, fun and, most of all, magical time at this year’s Winterlude!
