Rideau Hall, Thursday, May 30, 2013

My wife, Sharon, and I are pleased to welcome you to Rideau Hall, the home of the people of Canada.

As close friends and partners in the Americas, your arrival is cause for celebration.

Despite the geographic distance that separates our two countries, we have a great deal in common.

Canadians and Chileans share a common vision—one in which democracy, human rights and justice prevail. We also desire prosperity and security for the many, not just the few. And we dream of societies in which government, business, civil society and academia work together to strengthen our communities and nations.

Democracy, security and prosperity: this is the vision that lies at the core of our engagement. Canada considers Chile an important and trusted partner in achieving these goals.

Your visit is so very welcome, because it is above all through face-to-face meetings that we get to know each other and form the relationships that are at the heart of good diplomacy. I am certain that during your time here, you will find Canadians to be warm, engaging, and interested to learn about Chile, past and present.

Learning, in fact, is an important aspect of our partnership. Together, Canadians and Chileans are studying, researching and innovating together, both here in Canada and in your country.

As a lifelong learner, I have spent the better part of my life as a student, teacher and university administrator. I look forward to discussing our learning and innovation ties with you, and to exploring our great potential.

Together, I am certain we can further our partnership and build upon our shared values, strong trade and investment relationship, and extensive people-to-people ties.

Canada and Chile enjoy so many different avenues of co-operation through which we can build smarter, more caring societies.

With this in mind, I again welcome you to Rideau Hall and to Canada in the spirit of friendship and respect.

Thank you.
