I am delighted to join you for this presentation of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards.
Since becoming governor general, it has been my privilege to meet hundreds of young recipients of these awards in cities across Canada. Hearing of their achievements and dreams has inspired me throughout my mandate.
Recently, I travelled to France, where I was joined by 5 000 young Canadians for the commemoration of the 95th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Like many local residents, I was amazed to learn that these young people paid their way to France themselves, through fundraising, so that they could learn about our remarkable history and offer their respects to our veterans.
The presence of so many young Canadians at the memorial was profoundly moving, as was their hope for a more fair and peaceful world. It reminded me that wherever we see young people, we also see hope and the desire to change things for the better.
The same is true for each of you—and you are already making an impact on our country. That is what brought you here today.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a wonderful tribute to the talent and determination of youth. The youth of this country are a vital source of ideas, renewal and optimism for our society. Seeing you here today and hearing of your accomplishments, I know that our confidence is well-placed.
One thing is certain: your energy and contributions are essential to the smarter, more caring nation to which we aspire.
On behalf of all Canadians, I thank and congratulate each of you on your achievements.
Already you are building the smarter, more caring Canada of which we dream.
Thank you.
