Thank you for your warm welcome. My wife, Sharon, and I have been looking forward to this visit to Prince Albert, a city with a proud history and a bright future.

One of the reasons why I am so pleased to be here is to have the opportunity to learn more about the community spirit that animates you, the people of Prince Albert. I understand the Mayor has been known to say that in a province renowned for its generosity and volunteerism, Prince Albert is the capital of giving, and I would like to know your secret!

You may be aware that, as governor general, I have made it one of my goals to encourage volunteerism and philanthropy across Canada in the hopes of fostering a smarter, more caring nation.

I truly believe that our success as individuals, as communities and as a country is measured by the extent to which we give and care for others. Judging by the many successful fundraising efforts that have taken place here over the years—including that which enabled the building of this impressive complex in which we gather—the people of Prince Albert share a similar mindset.

In fact, I recognize in Prince Albert certain elements of the community of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, where both Sharon and I grew up.

Like our hometown, Prince Albert is a mid-sized city that serves as a regional hub and as a gateway to the northern part of the province. And, like the people of Sault Ste. Marie, the residents of Prince Albert are known for being innovative and big-hearted—and for making an impact far beyond the city limits.

Just last week, for example, I read about a Habitat for Humanity project here in Prince Albert in which inmates of the Riverbend Institution are helping to build a home for a local family. This is a remarkable project, both smart and caring in the skills it will build in prisoners and in the roof it will provide for those in need.

Stories like this only spring from innovative, generous communities, and Prince Albert is exemplary in this respect—an inspiration to all Canadians.

I am delighted to see Prince Albert thriving in these exciting times for Saskatchewan. Our visit has already brought us into contact with some wonderful people, and we are looking forward to hearing more about your hopes and dreams for the future.

Thank you.
