The history of Black people on this continent tells the story of our emancipation, of our long struggle for freedom. It is the story of all the pitfalls and injustices we overcame, but it is also the story of all the victories we won, victories that allowed us to dream of a world that was more just and more humane.
This history is also the story of every woman and man who ever demanded respect and dignity. You could even say it is the story of all those who believe that equality is an inalienable right.
Let us celebrate Black History Month by working together to break down the walls of prejudice, create ties of solidarity that transcend our differences, and build a society in which every person has an equal opportunity to grow and prosper.
