My husband, Jean-Daniel Lafond, and I would like to thank Their Honours Herménégilde Chiasson and Marcia Babineau for graciously offering to host this dinner in honour of my first official visit to New Brunswick as Governor General of Canada.

I think it is fair to say that Jean-Daniel feels as though he is in familiar territory; he is familiar with the places, the culture, the issues and the people.

I would like to begin these friendly remarks by recognizing the extraordinary efforts made by His Honour to have the Acadian culture heard all around the world. It gives us great pleasure to salute the artist that you are and that you continue to be.

This dinner is an opportunity for us to meet some amazing people. Jean-Daniel and I feel honoured to be among some of the most creative people in New Brunswick and we look forward to speaking with you.

As His Honour said, let us zigzag together tonight; that is, as he himself explained, [translation] “to navigate, wander, and zigzag, as there are many ways of getting to the same destination.”

I like the idea of dialogue as a friendly means of approaching the ideas that are closest to our heart.

And that is what I have seen since I arrived in New Brunswick: conversation that flows with ease.

An openness to dialogue.

A solidarity that unites you.

A concern for the greater good that has come up in every conversation I have had.

I have met so many people here who are willing to get involved to ensure that everyone gets their fair share.

Actions that, collectively, create a promising future for the entire community.

Your spirit, your compassion, and your determination honour you.

I will also do my part and share your example with all Canadians and wherever I go in the world.

Thank you again for the warm welcome you have given us.
