“Jean-Daniel Lafond and I were deeply saddened to learn of the attack which took the lives of Private Robert Costall, as well as an American soldier, and a number of our Afghani allies. Private Costall died defending his fellow soldiers, and will always be remembered for his bravery, his courage, and his dedication to his country.
The members of the contingent stationed in Afghanistan today mourn the loss of their comrade-in-arms. But though they have been dealt a blow, their resolve is unchanged. Their constant vigilance and their unwavering belief in what they are accomplishing every day, in spite of the risks they face, are remarkable.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Private Costall during this difficult time. We wish to express to them our deepest sympathies.”
