“It was with deep emotion and sadness that Jean-Daniel Lafond and I heard from Cape Dorset, Nunavut, of the terrible tragedy which took the lives of four Canadians serving in Afghanistan. Corporal Matthew Dinning, Bombardier Myles Mansell, Lieutenant William Turner and a fourth soldier, who has not been identified at the request of his family, will always be heroes in the eyes of our country.

They went to Afghanistan hoping to make a difference, and in this they succeeded, helping to improve the lives of its citizens. Our women and men in uniform have suffered an immense loss today, and yet, I know they will forge ahead and continue their valuable work, bringing peace to a troubled land.

All Canadians join with me in extending sincere condolences to the family and friends of these brave men. They will be remembered as Canadians who fought for what they believed in and who were devoted to their mission and to their country.”
