The coming of a new year is a time to take stock and look to the future with hope. We make resolutions, develop projects, follow new dreams. Above all else, we hope to live life to the fullest and spread joy to those around us.

For Marie-Éden, Jean-Daniel and me, 2005 has been a year of possibilities. We would like to thank all those who welcomed us in friendship and offered us their wishes for success – they touched us deeply, and we carry them with us still.

May 2006 be luminous and spark everlasting hope for each and every one of us to hold in our hearts and for our fellow human beings. I look forward to travelling this country once again and meeting with Canadians who are the very heart and soul of this land. I would like so much for us to succeed in ensuring that respect, tolerance, and sharing—values that are so dear to my heart—prevail.

I hope that the New Year will bring us all peace, health, happiness, and prosperity, and that extra measure of harmony that makes each of our adventures in this world so very precious.

Michaëlle Jean
