Because they challenged the status quo, because mistrust was not a part of their path, because they took charge of their destiny, because they were women, the voices of the 14 victims of the terrible tragedy at École Polytechnique de Montréal still echo in our ears since that fateful day, December 6, 1989.
What meaning can we give to that tragedy, still so painful and fresh in our memory? How can we reconcile such a feeling of helplessness with a willingness to act? My thoughts turn to the families and loved ones of the victims, whose lives were forever changed.
May this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women give us all pause to reflect and join together to achieve equality between women and men, once and for all.
