Biophysicist and University of Toronto professor Mark Henkelman has expanded the possibilities of medical imaging on Canada’s health landscape. Beginning with his acquisition of one of the first magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines in Canada, he has fundamentally changed the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of disease through his groundbreaking work. Under his leadership, the Mouse Imaging Centre (MICe) at the Hospital for Sick Children has risen to the forefront of the field worldwide. As an educator and research leader, he has broadly helped nurture medical research in Canada.
