On June 5, 1997, Donald Therens rescued a man from a burning car near Regina, Saskatchewan. Mr. Therens was driving to work at sunrise when he witnessed a collision between a tractor-trailer and a car on the Trans-Canada Highway. He immediately rushed to the burning car and found the driver trapped inside. Unable to open either of the front doors, he crawled inside through the back door on the driver's side and despite the intensifying fire, managed to free the injured victim. He then kicked out the driver's door and, aided by others, dragged the victim to safety moments before fire destroyed the vehicle.
