On July 9, 1995, 15-year-old George Pinlac, Jr., lost his life while attempting to rescue a teenager from drowning in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Mr. Pinlac was at a largely populated public beach with friends when he heard the cries of a teenage boy who had run into difficulty while trying to retrieve his beach ball outside of the roped swimming area. Noticing that the victim had trouble staying afloat, Mr. Pinlac immediately swam to his rescue. As Mr. Pinlac attempted to grab hold of him, the panicked boy clutched him by the neck and forced him under water several times. Tragically, both Mr. Pinlac and the other teenager drowned.
