Medal of Bravery
Late in the afternoon of May 21, 1985, Jacques Carrières and Stan Cousineau went to the rescue of two youths struggling desperately to maintain control over their canoe in the Deschênes Rapids of the Ottawa River. Well aware of the risks, the would-be rescuers launched a power boat and steered through the turbulent waters. Close to the victims they passed a rope and, with considerable difficulty, began the tow to shore. Three times their outboard motor stalled and they narrowly escaped being swallowed by the killer rapids.
