The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. A black shield with a yellow band and lozenges is common for Scottish persons bearing the surname Mitchell. To make these arms unique, the lozenges are black and placed on the band. The border is a Scottish method of differencing.

This Latin verb means “I have trusted.” It is likely a reference to the last line of the Te Deum prayer, “O Lord, in thee have I trusted,” thus expressing Mr. Mitchell’s faith.
