It was with great sorrow that my husband Jean-Daniel Lafond and I learned of the death of Corporal David Braun, from the 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, based in Shilo, Manitoba, in a suicide attack in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

My thoughts are first and foremost with Corporal Braun’s loved ones who have lost someone who was very dear to them. I share their grief at this most difficult time. I know that all Canadians empathize with the deep sorrow felt by the family, friends and colleagues of this young man, who willingly gave his heart and soul so that the Afghan people could have a better future.

An Afghan civilian also lost his life in the attack, which only adds to the cycle of bereavement inflicted on the Afghan people by the daily violence and terror. Our thoughts are also with the three Canadian soldiers who were injured. We wish them an early recovery.

The values and resolve shared by our troops in Afghanistan are deeply rooted in their commitment to continue the necessary reconstruction work so that security and freedom may one day flourish in that part of the world.
