I am so pleased to be here to celebrate the long and shared history that we are privileged to enjoy.

Barbados and Canada have a strong relationship based on this history, including robust people-to-people ties established through immigration and tourism, as well as through commercial, educational and other linkages that continue to expand and evolve.

In fact, I look forward to exploring these ties and linkages closely during my visit. That is why I am thankful for your presence here today. What better way to learn about Barbados and this country’s relationship with Canada than by speaking directly with those who know them best?

I hope that this visit will result in a lasting commitment that both countries will more closely share knowledge and experiences. I often speak about the diplomacy of knowledge—which is the sharing of knowledge between people and across disciplines and borders—as a tool countries can use to improve and strengthen relationships with others.

I see this being practised everywhere I go, and I will be encouraging all those I meet in Barbados to more fully engage with Canada to build a smarter, more caring world.

It is also fitting that we find ourselves together in this year, marking a milestone occasion for our common head of State. The reign of Her Majesty The Queen has been one of dedication to service.

To Canada, to Barbados, to the entire Commonwealth, The Queen is a symbol of our history and of the uniqueness of our systems of governance. Her Majesty is also an example we can all follow, one who has committed herself to the countries of the Commonwealth with such affection that we cannot help but give thanks.

During the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, we have the opportunity to renew our ties with the Crown and to express our appreciation for The Queen, who every day serves her people with grace and distinction.

I would like to propose a toast. To Her Majesty The Queen and 60 years on the Throne, and to Canada and Barbados and our flourishing and ever-expanding relationship.

Thank you.
