I am delighted to be here with you today in Maillardville. Thank you for your warm welcome.

I have been looking forward to this visit, and to learning more about your deep roots in this province. This community reflects our heritage as Canadians and our continuing vitality in so many ways.

Let me begin by congratulating you on all that you have done in recent years to celebrate your history. You are now in your second century, and I commend you on your ability to respect the past while evolving as a community.

I am struck by the diversity of Maillardville, and your success in working together. You are a fine example of what makes Canada work, and of our great potential in the world.

I have been referring to communities like Maillardville in many of my speeches of late—both here in Canada and overseas. I never hesitate to tell people that Canada is one of the most diverse countries in the world.

Forty years ago, Canada became the first country in the world to officially adopt a policy of multiculturalism. Today, our diversity is the foundation of our national identity and a source of great pride for Canadians.

Of course, you of all people know this very well.

You also know that diversity gives us a strong advantage in today’s world. Whether you speak a second language or embrace differing traditions, being comfortable with diversity is a tremendous asset in our globalized world.

One of the best things we can do for our children is to raise them in diverse communities such as this one. As the author John Kao has written, schools today must support students in developing “cultural intelligence” through multilingualism, international experience and respect for and appreciation of diversity.

The same applies to our communities. Together, we must foster and celebrate diversity at every turn.

As governor general, I have been inviting all Canadians to imagine ways to create a smarter, more caring nation as we approach the 150th anniversary of our unique Confederation in 2017. And I want to extend this invitation to you, the people of Maillardville.

Be proud of what you have achieved, and continue in your efforts to support each other and the most diverse and inclusive Canada imaginable.

Your help is essential to creating the country of which we dream.

Thank you.
