We are very saddened to learn that Canadian Trooper Michael Yuki Hayakaze, of the Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians), based out of Edmonton, Alberta, died today near Kandahar while taking part in a re-supply operation.
His team is in shock at having lost such a highly regarded member. Indeed, this loss is deeply felt by all of his comrades in the Afghan mission, as well as by all Canadians.
My husband, Jean-Daniel Lafond, joins me in honouring his memory, his valour and his determination to contribute generously, and to the best of his abilities, to restoring peace, stability and decent living conditions in Afghanistan.
On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. May they know that we stand with them in this moment of tragedy.
