Visit to Canada's Arctic - August 31, 2018

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, was in Canada’s Arctic from August 30 to September 1, 2018, where she visited the Hamlet of Pangnirtung, in Nunavut, before boarding the Canadian research icebreaker CCGS Amundsen, in Qikiqtarjuaq, for a 36-hour scientific program to explore the Arctic Ocean. 

  • The Canadian research icebreaker CCGS Amundsen has been a major catalyst in revitalizing Canadian Arctic science by giving Canadian researchers and their international collaborators unprecedented access to the Arctic Ocean.
  • Upon arrival in Qikiqtarjuaq, Her Excellency was greeted by Her Worship Mary Killiktee, Mayor of Qikiqtarjuaq.
  • Before leaving Qikiqtarjuaq for the CCGS Amundsen on board a Coast Guard helicopter, Her Excellency met with a Coast Guard Officer and Dr. Louis Fortier, CEO of Amundsen Science and Scientific Director of ArcticNet.
  • Upon landing on the CCGS Amundsen, the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science was greeted by Claude Lafrance, Captain of the CCGS Amundsen.
  • Upon arrival on the CCGS Amundsen, a group photo was taken on the deck.

  • In the afternoon, Her Excellency toured the CCGS Amundsen.
  • This piston collects sediment from the ground which is later analyzed.
  • Later, the Governor General, Dr. Nemer and Minister Duncan participated in science experiments on deck.
