Welcome to Rideau Hall. We are gathered on the unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg Nation.
It is a pleasure and an honour to present you with these insignia today—one of my last opportunities to do so before the end of my mandate. I’m especially glad to see some familiar faces among you.
Today, you join a long line of accomplished Canadians.
It is moving to recall that, at the very first Order of Canada ceremony in 1967, the appointees included hockey legend Maurice Richard, author Hugh MacLennan, and Montréal mayor Jean Drapeau.
Excellence in this country has always taken many forms.
Members of the Order come from every region of Canada, and from the many cultures that make our country strong.
During my mandate, I have had the privilege of investing exceptional individuals in fields as varied as sport, leadership, innovation and volunteer service.
I’ve also recognized distinguished media figures like Lisa LaFlamme and George Stroumboulopoulos, as well as remarkable artists. Among them are Marc Messier, Diana Krall and Christi Belcourt, a proud Métis painter whose work graces this very room. And today, I am proud to recognize Canadian excellence in each of you.
You have helped shape our cherished national sport.
You have advanced health and well-being.
You have strengthened communities through philanthropy, and helped move us toward a more inclusive and equitable society.
You have also ensured Indigenous voices resonate more strongly—through the arts, in public life, and in the ongoing work of truth and reconciliation.
In each of your achievements, I see courage.
I also see some of the themes brought to light by acclaimed Cree poet Louise Bernice Halfe–Sky Dancer, whom we are fortunate to have with us today.
Sky Dancer, you write of a courage that is quiet but enduring; of the strength that grows from relationships; and of bravery. You portray bravery not as the absence of fear, but the choice to move forward with responsibility and compassion.
Your words offer guidance to all members of the Order of Canada.
The Order is not only a means of recognition. It is an invitation: to continue to lead with courage, to remain strong, and to deepen the ties we share as a nation.
On behalf of all those whose lives you have touched, thank you.
Congratulations!
