I am truly moved to stand with you here today in Kalaallit Nunaat to mark this meaningful moment.

What we have just witnessed is more than the raising of a flag.

It reflects the deep and lasting relationships between Canadians and Greenlanders.

Arctic peoples share ties that long predate diplomacy as we know it.

In my own family, we regarded Inuit in Greenland as our relatives—as members of one people.

For generations, we travelled across these lands and waters, learning from one another and supporting each other.

We shared a language. We shared culture. Families knew each other. Communities exchanged knowledge.

And we were bound by a deep understanding of the Arctic. Its seasons, its rhythms, and the subtle signals from nature that guide hunting, travel and survival.

The challenges of life in the Arctic could only be met through co-operation, ingenuity and trust.

Inuit from Greenland and Canada have always been a powerful example of this.

Today, we are building on that same spirit of respect and co-operation as we open a new chapter in our shared history.

The opening of this consulate not only strengthens our diplomatic relations. It also reinforces Canada’s respect for the people of Greenland: respect for your democracy, your sovereignty and your right to shape your own future.

I thank everyone—in every sector—for contributing to this new chapter.

I am confident it will bring deeper understanding and greater possibilities for both our nations.

Thank you. Merci. Nakurmiik.
