Message from the Governor General of Canada on the passing of Frank Gehry

December 5, 2025

The passing of Frank Gehry marks the loss of a true global architectural titan. He was seen by many as one of Canada's most brilliant artistic minds.

The Toronto native's visionary designs, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Walt Disney Concert Hall redefined modern architecture. His structures did not just occupy space; they challenged norms, revolutionized urban landscapes, and left an indelible mark on how we interact with art and culture for generations to come.

A Companion of the Order of Canada, his legacy is a powerful reminder of the incredible innovation and boundary‑pushing creativity that is born in Canada and shared with the world.

My husband, Whit, and I extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and the countless people around the globe inspired by his work.

Mary Simon
