Message from the Governor General on Firefighters’ National Memorial Day

September 14, 2025

On this Firefighters’ National Memorial Day, let us recognize the brave firefighters who selflessly risk their lives every day to protect their fellow Canadians. Let us also remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in doing so.

Every day, firefighters safeguard our communities, our cherished landscapes and our very lives from the destruction of fire and natural disasters. This year’s wildfires have once again been some of the most devastating in Canadian history, with over 8 million hectares burned and thousands displaced from their homes. Canadian firefighters also assisted with wildfires in California this year, demonstrating the global cooperation required to combat natural disasters.

Whether they are full-time professionals or volunteers who have stepped up in moments of crisis, the courage and unwavering dedication of firefighters have been powerfully evident throughout. They are an inspiration to us all, and we owe them and their families an enduring debt of gratitude.
