I am pleased to welcome you today on the traditional, unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg Nation.
Even during a busy, significant week for Canadian democracy, it is important to take the time to recognize the vital contributions of volunteers in our society.
This is also National Volunteer Week, making today’s ceremony part of a nationwide celebration of Canada’s inspiring volunteers.
Volunteers are present everywhere.
Volunteers like you are present in our schools and hospitals. You ensure the smooth operation of sports events, festivals and cultural organizations, and help forge valuable connections between people.
You are mentors for our youth, welcoming faces for newcomers and rays of sunshine for our seniors and veterans.
You support vulnerable people in our society.
You nurture our communities to help them become more resilient, and address their many needs, from food security to mental health.
In fact, without volunteers, most Canadian organizations say they simply could not function. Your talents, your skills and your compassion are much needed and appreciated.
And as someone who grew up in a small community in the Arctic, I can tell you that no community can thrive without compassion.
Without co-operation. Without people helping each other and dedicating their time to improving lives around them.
Thank you for devoting your precious time to improving the lives of others.
Time is scarce in a fast-paced world of work, family and social commitments. So, it is especially generous of you to spend that precious time helping others.
And that is the generosity we are recognizing today with the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers.
Thanks, and congratulations to all of you on this well-deserved honour.
