I would like to begin by acknowledging that we are gathered on the traditional, unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg Nation.
By acknowledging their enduring connection to this land, we honour their stories and continue to foster reconciliation through understanding.
Commissionaires, what an honour it is to be here with you this evening, as your viceregal patron.
Looking out at you.
Recognizing your service.
As every governor general since 1937 has.
I must say: “Good deeds do shine brightly.”
The Canadian Corps of Commissionaires is Canada’s largest private-sector employer of veterans.
Over 3 500 veterans serve with you.
Your national organization is now more than 22 000 members, with over 3 000 veterans from the Canadian Armed Forces and the RCMP.
Commissionaires guard the infrastructure of this country.
You contribute to our security through digital fingerprinting, cyber protection, and surveillance.
My husband and I witness the daily dedication and professionalism of Captain Claude Dubé and his team at Rideau Hall, and we are thankful.
But the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires is more than an organization. More than an employer. It’s an idea.
The idea that your actions, your service, your love of Canada goes on.
And that others care about what happens in a person’s life, after a war ends.
When the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires was founded in 1925, one hundred years ago, that is astonishing and worth celebrating.
The world was recovering from the shock and damage of the First World War.
The Commissionaires borrowed a unique model of caring from Britain. To provide meaningful employment to veterans returning from the horrors of battle.
And what they have given back to our society over a hundred years is an incredible gift. Of dignity, and pride in their work.
Today, we face uncertainty and complex global challenges.
We continue to need people like you—people of honour, purpose, and resilience.
Tonight, you deserve to be celebrated in this 100th anniversary year.
To all Commissionaires—past and present—thank you. This evening is for you.
May your service continue to inspire us to selflessly serve Canada, and to care for each other.
Happy anniversary!
