About the Federal Court of Appeal and the Federal Court
The predecessor to these federal courts, the Exchequer Court, was established in 1875, at the same time as the Supreme Court of Canada. Almost 100 years later, the Federal Court of Canada’s trial and appeal divisions came into effect. In 2003, the two divisions of the court became separate entities: The Federal Court of Appeal and the Federal Court.
