Governor General to undertake visit to Toronto

OTTAWA, Ontario—Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, and Mr. Whit Fraser will undertake a visit to Toronto on Saturday, May 14, 2022.

During the visit, Her Excellency will present the new guidon to the Queen’s York Rangers. That evening, Her Excellency will honour renowned Inuit singer and humanitarian Susan Aglukark at the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences’ (CARAS) 2022 JUNO Opening Night Awards, presented by Ontario Creates.

Guidon Presentation Ceremony at Fort York National Historic Site
  

Her Excellency will present the new guidon to the Queen’s York Rangers during a ceremony at the Fort York National Historic Site. Upon arrival, Their Excellencies will be greeted by Her Honour the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and Colonel of the Queen’s York Rangers (1st American Regiment), as well as by other dignitaries and regiment supporters.

The guidon is a consecrated flag carried by a military unit as a rallying point in battle, and a unit’s most honoured possession. The new guidon of the Queen’s York Rangers incorporates some of the many battle honours awarded to the regiment, including five new honours: Queenston, Niagara, Detroit, Defence of Canada 1812-1815, and Afghanistan.

Presentation of the 2022 Humanitarian Award at the 2022 JUNO Opening Night Awards

Her Excellency will present acclaimed Inuit singer-songwriter Susan Aglukark with the 2022 Humanitarian Award for her long-standing dedication to improving the lives of children and youth in northern Indigenous communities through her Arctic Rose Foundation.

The JUNO Humanitarian Award recognizes philanthropic contributions of Canadian artists and industry pioneers who have made a meaningful impact on social welfare.

Since 2012, Susan Aglukark has led the Arctic Rose Foundation, an organization that supports Inuit, First Nations and Métis youth through the creation of Indigenous-led, arts-based after-school programs, as well as other engaging cultural and creative projects.
