Governor General to Visit Metro Vancouver

OTTAWA—Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, will visit the Metro Vancouver region including Surrey, North Vancouver and Vancouver from February 21 to 22, 2020.

In Surrey, the Governor General will engage with students from Simon Fraser University’s School of Sustainable Energy Engineering and meet with residents of the YWCA Alder Gardens. In the City of North Vancouver, Her Excellency will invite members of the community to join her for a public skate as part of the initiative GGactive. In the District of North Vancouver, she will recognize the youth who rescued a child on Grouse Mountain. In Vancouver, she will meet with first responders dealing with the opioid overdose crisis, before she takes part in the Vancouver 2010 Olympics 10th Anniversary Celebration.

Friday, February 21

1 p.m.
Visit to Simon Fraser University Surrey Campus

The Governor General will meet with faculty and students from Simon Fraser University, including those from its new School of Sustainable Energy Engineering to learn about the research being done. Her Excellency will also engage in a question and answer session with students.

Visit to YWCA Alder Gardens

The Governor General will visit the YWCA Alder Gardens to meet with residents and learn about the services that are offered to single mothers and their children.

Meeting with First Responders

Her Excellency will meet with first responders dealing with the opioid overdose crisis and visit a safe injection site.

On August 1, 2019, Vancouver Fire Rescue Services and Vancouver Coastal Health came together to form the Combined Overdose Response Team in order to combat the opioid crisis. For more information, visit

Recognition of a Heroic Act

The Governor General will meet with the five teens who saved a young boy who was dangling from a chairlift on Grouse Mountain. She will present them with Governor General’s Coins in honour of their heroic act.

Open Skate with Members of the Community

Her Excellency will skate with members of the community as part of her GGactive initiative. GGactive is an initiative whereby the Governor General joins Canadians in activities that promote healthy living.

Vancouver 2010 10th Anniversary Gala

The Governor General will deliver remarks at the Vancouver 2010 10th Anniversary Gala. She helped carry the Olympic Flag into BC Place during the Vancouver 2010 Olympics Opening Ceremony.
