Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Monday, June 16, 2014
It is a pleasure to be here to celebrate this community and the people who make Charlottetown so special.
Today, I have the distinct honour of presenting Caring Canadian Awards and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards.
Both of these awards are given to individuals who have made a difference in their communities, who have made Canada a stronger, better country.
The Caring Canadian Award proves that compassion is a wonderful way to strengthen our nation. The recipients who have joined us here today have put in a lifetime of work into their communities. Moreover, they have changed lives in countless ways, both large and small. They have given and continue to give of themselves, of their time and their talent, and do so quietly, without any expectation of recognition or reward.
But their deeds deserve to be lauded, because we need to celebrate our givers; there is so much we can learn from them.
They care about the well-being of others and show us what we can achieve when we give back.
For its part, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is given to young Canadians who have shown growth and development during the course of this program. They have discovered something special about themselves and have already contributed so much to our country. Hearing about their achievements and dreams is inspiring, and reminds us that the country to which we aspire—a country that is both smart and caring—is a goal, not a given.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a wonderful tribute to the talent and determination of youth.
Today’s award recipients—indeed everyone in this room who works on behalf of their community—demonstrate that we must all work together if we are to succeed. Those who build our society up—young people, volunteers, dedicated professionals, anyone and everyone who is smart and caring—they are a vital source of ideas and renewal. They have shown themselves to be conscientious and engaged citizens, and I have no doubt that they will continue to give back to this community and this country.
I would also like to extend special congratulations to the Community Foundations of PEI on the launch of its Smart and Caring Fund. As the patron of community foundations across the country, I am proud that you have taken up the challenge to build stronger communities. The work you have done to prepare for this launch is both commendable and appreciated.
Finally, I would like to say, to all of you: the confidence that Canadians have placed in you is well placed, indeed.
Your energy and efforts are essential to building a smarter, more caring Canada.
On behalf of all Canadians, I thank you and I congratulate you on your achievements.
