Fifteen years ago, the United Nations declared May 15 International Day of Families. Let us make this day an opportunity to reflect on family values in our lives and in our society.

The family has evolved considerably, the definition has changed and has sometimes been extended. But one thing remains: the family is our first anchor and the point from which we grow. It should always be a place where we find a shoulder to lean on; the assurance that someone will listen attentively and with respect; emotional security; the best advice and the encouragement we need to use our own wings to fly away and achieve our dreams.

The family is also a fragile place in times of hardship, conflict, or crisis. That is when the community must act in solidarity and assume its collective responsibility to help others when they are in need.

In the midst of the current economic crisis, we see how important it is to strengthen our ties, to take the time to talk to one another, to help one another, and to ensure these uncertain times do not destroy what is most precious to us. And what is most irreplaceable is the affection and love of those who are closest to us.

Michaëlle Jean
