For me, Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day has always marked the beginning of summer, a season filled with festivals, rhythms, colours and accents. This day is an opportunity to celebrate the unique contribution francophonie has made to North American soil, as well as the unifying power of a language and a culture that is deeply rooted in our hearts.

In days gone by, fires were lit on the evening of Saint-Jean to welcome the summer solstice and honour agrarian traditions. These rituals, modernized over time, continue to symbolize the vitality of the many communities that share a French heritage, which continues to burn here and on every continent like the bonfires of yesteryear.

Everywhere I go in this country, I meet French-speaking Canadians who are proud of their history, committed to the present and looking to the future. On the eve of the 400th anniversary of a French presence in North America, one thing is certain: the French language and culture are alive and well all across this vast country we call home.

Let us join our sisters and brothers—those with whom we share a language and a passion—and celebrate the ties that unite us. May these festivities be a vibrant symbol of our enthusiasm and spirit of solidarity.

Michaëlle Jean
