March 20, 2007

The International Francophonie Day is an opportunity to recognize Francophones from around the world—to celebrate the language we all share and to rejoice in the rich cultural diversity of our accents, legends and histories.

La Francophonie brings together a global heritage of cultures, vibrantly brought to life through the power of song, literature, cinema, dance, paintings, sculptures and so many other artistic expressions.

La Francophonie is also an international community where ideas, discussions, economies and, above all, solidarities abound. This year’s theme, which translates to “Living together, differently”, reminds us of the 200 million French speakers and the 803 million women, men and children who coexist in the 68 member States and who are represented by the governments of the International Organization of La Francophonie. We can be proud of Canada’s unique relationships and place within this extended family.

I am very pleased to join Mr. Abdou Diouf, Secretary General of La Francophonie, in his wishes for a better world and for “this day to be an opportunity for everyone, on all continents, to celebrate the gift of the French language, allowing us to communicate beyond all borders and oceans, to meet each other, and to join our cultures, our traditions, our imaginations.”
